Mineral Wells
Mineral Wells was named for the mineral springs that are found in the area. In the early 1900’s the city was among the most notable travel destinations in this region. At the heart of the city was the World-Famous Baker Hotel which opened in 1929 and brought international visitors to the area to enjoy the perceived health benefits of the mineral waters. Stars such as Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Lawrence Welk and even Lyndon B. Johnson enjoyed the hotel over the years. After many years of being shuttered and falling into disrepair the hotel is now undergoing a long-awaited restoration that is shepherding in with it a renaissance of sorts for the whole community. Many high hopes exist for this previously bustling community that the best is only yet to come. Fort Wolters has a long history as a military base in Mineral Wells, dating back to 1925. It is most famous in recent history for being the Primary Helicopter Training Center during the Vietnam War. More than 40,000 were trained during that era, making a huge impact on the community. Fort Wolters closed down in the mid-1970’s and now make up an Industrial Park as well as National Guard training area.
