Wise County

Wise County includes many great communities, all with their own unique characteristics and history. The county has a total population of about 70,000 with the two largest cities, Decatur and Bridgeport, each having about 7,000 residents each. The Lyndon B. Johnson National Grasslands are found primarily in Wise County and offer more than 20,000 acres of land for public recreational uses including horseback riding, fishing, hunting, camping, hiking and more. The cities of Bridgeport and Decatur are located about 11 miles apart along US-380, which is a major highway that runs 670+ miles from San Antonio, NM all the way to Greenville, TX. This major highway access has allowed both cities to grow at faster paces than many of the other communities in Wise County. Additionally, US-287 runs through Decatur as well bringing more access. US-287 is a 500+ mile highway that runs from Port Arthur, TX all the way to Kerrick, OK. These roadways connect the city efficiently to many other markets and has allowed Decatur to enjoy commercial viability far beyond what its own city population would otherwise support. By serving as the commercial epicenter of the area, the city of Decatur provides a robust level of retail, dining, and service options to its residents. The cities of Wise County are full of small-town charm with their own unique characteristics, with many great small school districts to explore.
